About

Zane Alexander S.B. is a composer, performer, and community music organizer based in San Diego. He began his formal music education early, earning a Certificate in Music Theory from Mesa College while still in high school, and later completed a degree in Composition at the University of San Diego. Zane’s distinct compositional voice has led to his music and workshops being hosted by museums, colleges, and arts organizations across Southern California.

As music director and co-founder of the San Diego New Verbal Workshop (SdNVW), established in 2022, Zane explores the expressive potential of voice and language. His work with the choir focuses on developing collective improvisation practices and applying extended vocal techniques. As a songwriter and performer, Zane’s choice of material and thoughtful approach provide audiences with a unique concert-going experience. His guitar playing has been compared to that of Bill Orcutt and Paul Simon, while his vocals have been likened to both Phil Minton and James Taylor. Zane’s diverse musical background makes him comfortable performing in improvisational, classical, and folk music styles, as well as composing and arranging music for dance, theater, and film.

Zane is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Composition at San Diego State University and serves as the venue manager and lead technician for the San Diego Dance Theater.

You can find Zane hosting an open mic at Public Square Coffee House and leading the SdNVW every Thursday.
